Liverpool (1984)

Today’s Throstle’s Nest stands on the corner of Chapel Gardens, next to St. Anthony’s.  Built in 1881, it was once an overnight hostelry for travellers using the Irish Ferries. Now managed by Mr. Graeme Pugh and his wife, Joan, this interesting pub also boasts a spook and/or a poltergeist. Family, staff and customers have seen or experienced some weird happenings there, even up to a week or two ago. Like – The spectre of an old woman, dressed in black, walking across the lounge. (“It’s often cold in a  corner of that room and at night, when I’m closing up, it is quite creepy,” says the landlord).
– Decanters, glasses and miniatures are mysteriously removed from one shelf to others, and on to the floor, but are never broken.
– Light bulbs are removed and placed elsewhere. One was seen to pop out of its socket over the bar, speed towards a wall, then stop “as if caught by an invisible hand” and laid gently in a bar ashtray. This was witnessed by six people.
– A battery-operated wallclock was suddenly dislodged at 2.10a.m. and placed on the floor.
– Glasses of drink have burst for no apparent reason. This once happened to a customer standing at the bar with his pint. The mischievous work of a spirited monkey, perhaps?
