Treguier, Brittany, France (1901)

 Festive Ghosts.

A marvellous story of supernatural appearances emanates from a cottage near Treguier, in Brittany. The goings-on in that cottage appear to be so lively that its tenant, a respectable washerwoman, no longer dares spend her nights there. In the nocturnal hours, and, for that matter, at intervals during the day as well, the movements of invisible dancers are distinctly heard, for the “ghosts” are energetic votaries of Terpsichore, and get through innumerable programmes of waltzes and polkas.

So great, indeed, is the force of example that the crockery in this humble establishment has taken to playing pranks too. Coffee cups and saucers execute a sort of quadrille, and pots and pans roll gaily out of the dwelling on to the road, to the bewilderment of the awe-stricken groups which congregate around this now famous spot. After all, it is rather refreshing to hear of “ghosts” which, instead of having some horrible crime on their consciences, as seemed to be the traditional rule, are of a festive temperament, and go in for revelry by night.
