Georgetown, Blaenau Gwent (1886)

 Strange phenomena at Tredegar.

During the past few days the inhabitants of the First-row, Georgetown, have been thrown into a state of consternation by having their windows smashed in a most mysterious and altogether unaccountable manner. Large stones have come flying through the windows back and front, and in one case all the panes, with the exception of two, were smashed.

A member of the police force repaired to the spot (so our correspondent was informed) to ascertain, if possible, the cause of this strange disturbance. Whilst outside one of the houses making inquiries a stone came whizzing by, adding another to the list of smashed window panes, and also, to use an American phrase, completely “flabbergasting” the usually shrewd intelligence of the member of her Majesty’s police force.

Mysterious window breaking at Tredegar.

Our Tredegar correspondent states that on Monday considerable excitement existed in the neighbourhood of Georgetown in consequence of several windows in Bottom-row being mysteriously broken. Superintendent Parker ordered two or three police constables to the spot in plain clothes, but the window breaking still continued, no less than 40 panes of glass being smashed at the front and back of the row. The missiles consisted of stones and small pieces of iron about the size of marbles, and were evidently thrown from a considerable distance, as though shot from a catapault or sling. When the police court was sitting on Tuesday one of the windows in the same row was broken, and the police up till now have failed to discover either the perpetrators of the damage or the mode adopted by them.
