Strange rappings.
Presbytery haunted by a ghost.
Curious noises have recently been heard in a block of buildings attached to the Presbytery, the residence of the Roman Catholic priest at Brigg, Lincs., and they have given rise to much conjecture, owing to the story which gained credence, over half a century ago, that the Presbytery was haunted.
Not quite 40 years ago the sudden death of a Catholic priest in his bed at the Presbytery lent colour to the story, and since that time it appears that the Presbytery has been the object of several ghostly visitations, which take the form of invisible footsteps, walking from the topmost bedrooms, down one flight of stairs only, in addition to curious rappings on the bedroom walls.
At one time the mysterious movements and knockings were said to be so distracting that the resident priest took up his residence in a nearby cottage, while an old lady who was courageous enough to rent the Presbytery, eventually concluded her days in a mental hospital.
The resident priest, Rev. Father Hunter, admitted to a Press representative that he had heard noises in the middle of the night, but he did not attribute them to supernatural causes, adding that they were most probably caused by rats.
