Mansfield, Nottinghamshire (1974)

 Family in fear.

A strange force has made their life hell.

But an exorcist may help.

An exorcist is to be called in to help a Mansfield family who say supernatural forces have subjected them to a year of terror. Five priests have already visited the Byron Street home of bus conductor Brian Tyrell, his 23-year-old wife Joan and their two children, but the unexplained acts continue. And a leading member of the Spiritualist Church in Mansfield, Mrs R. Gill has said the couple need expert help. The exorcist being called in is Father Gregory of the Society of the Sacred Mission at Kelham Priory, near Newark. He is a chaplain to the Bishop of Southwell, with special responsibility for exorcism.

Sometimes the poltergeist or ghost is annoying. Sometimes violent and sometimes it terrifies the children.  Since they bought their house last year: A saucepan has been thrown by an unseen force; The solid dining table has been upturned; Beds have been stripped; Gas fire, cooker and electrical appliances have been switched on in the night; Patrick, three, woke crying and said: “Get that man out of my bed.”; Four-year-old Robert has also told of seeing a man in the bedroom; They have heard heavy footsteps in the house; Mrs Tyrell has been pushed downstairs, injuring her back.

Mrs Tyrell believes she may be possessed in some way. The force seems to follow her, for when she visited her mother’s home things started flying in that house. When the trouble started on March 21 last year there was a heavy odour in the kitchen. Then things started to fly and things go lost. At first Mr and Mrs Tyrell blamed each other, but they are past that stage.

The couple have borrowed crosses from a church and they carry these when things have to be put back in place. In every room there is an old church Bible. The only theory about why the strange happenings should suddenly begin came from a priest. He noticed that the start coincided with the digging up of the Quakers’ Graveyard of Stockwell Gate, Mansfield.

Mrs Joan Tyrrell with Patrick’s bed as she found it after hearing a noise. Patrick was still asleep as the children are strapped in at night. [you what??]

Mrs Tyrrell holds a battered saucepan and colander while husband Brian and Robert look on. In the corner are church crosses.
