Guardman’s Ghost at Caterham.
London, July 7.
There is a ghost among guardsmen at the Caterham Depot, Surrey – the training centre for Britain’s crack Brigade of Guards. Nobody has seen it, but the soldiers say that it makes bars of soap move around shelves, produces showers of nails and spills cleaning material on the depot’s polished floor. Once a guardsman saw a pair of army boots come to attention – with nobody in them. Once a telephone rang in the Quartermaster’s stores – and nobody was at the other end.
Officers at the depot are sceptical. “If we thought psychical research was necessary, we would have it, but we do not,” said one. But the rank and file are convinced that the spirit of a dead guardsman is at large. Once, they say, they heard bumps coming from the stores. They whispered, “If you’re a guardsman answer with two knocks.” Back came two knocks – with military precision. – Globe.
