Haunted house now to let.
Mr and Mrs Charles Quick and their family of three have recently moved out of their bungalow, Fairings, Seal-rd., Selsey, because it is haunted. The hauntings have involved two bungalows, Fairings and the grocer’s shop next door owned by Mrs Branson. The poltergeist, as the ghost is presumed to be, originally frequented Mrs Branson’s bungalow, and a previous owner, Miss Lewis, had an unsuccessful attempt made to exorcise it. But about five years ago it moved next door.
Its character is mischievous rather than malicious, but Mrs Quick, whose husband is often away from home, found that being alone in the house with her children at night made her nervous. She said that its manifestations mainly consisted of objects being moved, cupboards being unlocked, and once a mirror being pushed off a dressing table. On another occasion, pebbles came rattling on to the floor of the bedroom, as if thrown through the window, but the window was closed and there were no pebbles.
Mrs Branson, who said that she had lived quite happily with the poltergeist for seven or eight years, agreed that she had realised that the house was haunted when she came to live in Seal-rd. She had had very similar experiences to those of Mrs Quick. On one occasion, when alone in the house with the doors locked, she had heard a noise in the corridor, and on going to investigate had found a lump of ice on the floor. She added that nothing had occurred for the last four or five years. Many visitors to Fairings, which is now to let for the summer, have confirmed the existence of the poltergeist.
