A Haunted House.
It has been so long since a real case of a house being haunted has occurred, that many deemed the fashion had become entirely extinct. It seems that there is a lingering annoyance of this kind still to be found. A house in New York, inhabited by three respectable families, has yet room enough for some invisible spirit with a rowdy disposition to cut his pranks in. The True Sun says, since last Thursday, three families have been annoyed by furious knockings at the windows, inner doors, and other parts of the house, sometimes accompanied by groans.
The furniture in closets, and the crockery in cupboards, which were under lock and key, have been displaced in a most unaccountable manner: – The door is opened, on hearing a summons, as if a sledge hammer had been driven with tremendous force against it; no cause for the noise can be found, nor can any marks of the blows be seen upon the floor. We learn that the owner of the house kept watch last night with several persons, but could make no discoveries, although the disturbance which invariably commences at 4 p.m., and ends precisely at midnight, was continued as loudly as ever. We presume, the conjurer will soon be discovered.
