A Nineteenth Century Mystery.
During the last few days, a rather strange story has been freely talked of in the village; peculiar sounds being said to be heard in a house at Lower Tysoe, occupied by Mrs Walter, a widow. On Monday evening last, our correspondent paid the old lady a visit. A very large number of people were outside the cottage waiting to hear the mysterious sounds. The old lady informed our representative that she was first aroused on Wednesday night by a loud knock and bang at the door. She arose from bed, went downstairs, and looked out, but could neither see nor hear anyone, and since Wednesday the noises have been heard nightly. On Sunday night the noises were the loudest and most peculiar, being heard at as great distance as one hundred yards from the cottage, and sounding as though someone was smashing the slates on the house with a large hammer. The place has been closely watched by the police nightly, but nothing has yet transpired as to the cause.
