Whittlesey couple claim ghost.
The Searles on ‘Life with George’.

Mrs Searle points to the ‘swinging’ lamp.
A well-known Whittlesey couple claim that a ghost they have nicknamed ‘George’ is haunting their ancient home with some strange antics. Mr and Mrs Frank Searle, of 72 High Causeway, admitted yesterday that when the ghost first began his antics five years ago it was quite frightening – but gradually they have got used to it.
Several times, they have heard footsteps in the outside passageway or on their stairs – but when they got to investigate, “George” has gone. Other times, the ghost rattles doors and turns the latch. “George” has often awakened Mr and Mrs Searle with loud banging noises in the middle of the night. One of the most mysterious events was when an electric light fitting in their 300-year-old living room began moving about without anyone touching it: “I was really frightened then,” commented Mrs Searle.
Mr Searle has never seen the ghost, but his wife has caught a glimpse of it on one occasion. This was one dark night when she was outside their home with their dog, Fifi. “I saw the bottom half of a figure standing near the door,” she said: “As I got near it vanished.” The dog obviously also saw the ghost, said Mrs Searle, because he started to snarl and became very nasty. Mr Searle, who has lived in the house since he was born fifty years ago, said that once he never believed in ghosts – but now he had no doubts. Mr Searle’s great grandfather bought the property.
