A ‘ghost’ snuffs their candle and hurls books.
Mr and Mrs Arthur Evans used to think they had one of the quietest houses in the country. But now they say some poltergeist, a ghostly mischief-maker, keeps them awake at night. They say that as soon as they get to bed and switch off the electric light the ghost –
Throws books across the room; Flings a dressing-gown cord around; and thumps, raps and scratches on the wall.
First a magazine hurtles through the air, dousing the bedside candle. Then there’s a scratching and tearing at the door of their home in Bradford-rd, Lewes, Sussex, as if some animal were trying to get into the rooms. Then followed the thumps and other noises. Says Mr Evans: “My wife is terribly upset; I hope the ghost does not drive us out of the house.”
Mr Evans’s mother does not like it much either. Attracted to her son’s bedroom by strange noises and rappings, she was struck by a lipstick holder, which had been left on the dressing-table, and seemed to sail through the air of its own accord.
Before their nextdoor neighbour – eighty-two-years-old Mrs Annie Wright – died, the Evanses had none of these disturbances. They are wondering if there is any connection.
