Ghosts in a Castle.
At a manorial castle near Castelnuovo, says a correspondent of the Daily News in Lodi, there has taken place since August a series of spiritualistic phenomena which has frightened the superstitious population. The castle is partly uninhabited, and is kept in order by a woman who is a somnambulist. Almost every night, in the large empty rooms of the castle, were heard bells and the noise of knocking and hammering, together with subterranean thunder, while every now and then red-hot stones fell into the castle court-yard, mixed with pieces of wood inscribed with cabalistic letters.
People flocked to the place from all sides, but no one could explain these strange occurrences. The other evening a committee of gentlemen went from Lodi to the castle to examine into matters, and were received by the architect and led all over the place. They are convinced that all the noises and appearances only exist in the fancy of the woman housekeeper, and that, by suggestion, she has caused the architect and the superstitious population to hear and see what she described.
Some persons venture the supposition that a man who wished to buy the castle, and would not pay the high price asked by the proprietors, had set the magic going in order to obtain the property for a mere song.
