Brimstone Corner, Vermont, USA (1906)

Ghost Visits Vermont Home.

Family sells and leaves, but noise continues.

Whitehall, N.Y., Dec. 24 – Because a ghostly rambler insists on makaing him nightly visits, Prescott Savage of Brimstone Corners Vt., has sold his house and removed his family elsewhere. The visits have been going on for over two years, and Savage says that all the wealth in New York would not persuade him to endure it longer.

One night, after Savage had lived in this house for only a few days, he was awakened by something that felt like an electric apparatus being laid on his face. At first he was unable to rise from the bed. When he did finally search the room he did not discover anything unusual. Every night since then the house has been haunted, Savage says.

He and his family were sitting together one evening when they were disturbed by a noise in the kitchen which sounded like a horse walking on the floor. Upon investigation nothing was found that could have caused the disturbance.

One evening a few weeks ago Savage was reading down stairs after the family had gone to bed. This time he heard the same heavy sounds in another room. The members of the family were awakened by the noise. The house was again searched from top to bottom, but nothing was found.

Since then the sounds have continued, and later a series of peculiar rappings began. Several neighbours have slept in the house nights and they have all heard the same peculiar noises.

The purchaser of the house, a bachelor who does his own housekeeping, is already tired of his bargain and wants to sell. He, too, is kept awake nights by the ghostly rappings and noises.
