Roxburgh

During the past few days nearly every person in Roxburgh has no doubt heard of the “haunted house.” The two storey stone building recently erected for the Roxburgh Ferry Hotel, has been occupied during the past few weeks by three young men. About a fortnight past these men were aroused out of their sleep at midnight by the noise apparently of a man running up the staircase. A light was struck and a search made, but no trace of anyone was found. After again retiring to rest a similar noise was heard, and another search was made inside and out, but nothing could be seen.
I am assured by a gentleman residing in the immediate vicinity of this house, and also by the occupants, that nearly every night at 12 o’clock a noise may be heard as though some one was on the roof puncturing holes through the iron; sometimes the noise appears to be in the stable, at others on the house. One party, who could not sleep for the noise, got up and searched the stable without finding anything to cause it. It appears that on striking a light the noise ceases for a time. Several parties have tried in vain to ascertain the cause.
