The Capuchins’ Bells.
The Rev. A.B. Sharpe entertained his congregation at Manchester with a story of mysterious bell-ringing. Fifteen years ago, he said, some Capuchin monks took a house at Lewes, and were astonished to hear the door bells ringing almost continuously. They severed the bell wires, but found the ringing continued.
Investigating the history of the place, they found that shortly before the Reformation an owner of the house had left a bequest for prayers for the dead. The house fell into other hands, and the practice was discontinued. When the Capuchins resumed the prayers the bell-ringing ceased.
