 A “Ghost” in Bolton.

Residents in Bridge-street have for some days past been thrown into a state of interesting flutter, if not of consternation, by the announcement that a ghost has taken up his quarters in that vicinity, the place honoured by the unearthly visitant being a cook’s shop only a few yards from the end of Egyptian-street.

Remarkable noises have, it is said, been heard in one of the back rooms of these premises, as of boxes moving about, and some amount of fright has been experienced by the inhabitants of that and other houses in the neighbourhood. These noises have been continued for some times, and, after the manner of ghosts, they generally are heard in the night-time.

One man declared that whilst sitting on a box in the room both he and the box were, through some unexplained cause, moved some inches.

No reason can be at present assigned for the freaks of the supposed supernatural visitant, but it is certain a large number of persons are attracted nightly to the spot where the pranks of his Spiritship are said to be carried on.

The Ghost in Bridge-street.

Mr John Pendlebury, 150, Higher Bridge-street, writes as follows: – “I wish you to correct a mistake in yesterday’s issue, respecting the “ghost” taking up its quarters within a few yards from the end of Egyptian-street. The eating house is opposite the end of Hadwin-street, and is kept by a person of the name of Gibson.

The interest seemed last evening to be greater than ever, the street in the vicinity of the haunted shop being densely crowded by noisy juveniles, who hooted and yelled at almost everything that passed along the street. The shutters of the shop had to be put up and the door closed. Several policemen were fully engaged in keeping the footpaths clear.
