Buckfastleigh, Devon (1847)

 Remarkable Occurrence.

A lady has lately been staying at a house in the neighbourhood of Buckfastleigh, in this county, where the following unaccountable noises were heard by different members of the family: – On the 12th instant, at the “witching hour of night,” two members of the family were awoke by a noise resembling the giving or cracking of new furniture (of which there was none in the room).

They took no notice of this until they were again alarmed by a similar occurrence; this was repeated five or six times. One of the most surprising facts was, that when their attention was most roused they could hear nothing but talking or loud reading in the distance. There were two doors to the room, and on one of the ladies attempting to open one of them it was violently pulled out of her hand and shut with great force. On the rest of the family being alarmed, nothing more was heard but slamming of doors. Search was made to clear the mystery, but in vain.

Another curious fact: – An elderly member of the family, the same night and hour, in the preceding week, heard a noise as of the footsteps of men walking up the back stairs (which was next her bed-room), and a tramping overhead. She took no notice at the time, thinking it was the servants; but, on inquiring, she found that no one in the house had been moving at that hour. Both these parts of the house have been lately built.
