London (1740)

From the General Evening Post, July 29.

The old Humour of Witchcraft and haunted Houses, seems to come mightily in Fashion, some designing People have spread it abroad that two Houses in St. James’s-street are nightly visited with Demons, which has so far prevail’d with the foolish and credulous, that many pretend to assert they hear Dogs howling in the Houses, tho’ they keep none, Stones flying about, pumping, shovelling Coals, winding a Horn, rakeing the Fire, and abundance of such frolicksome Tricks, to the great Annoyance of the Neighbourhood, and Diversion of a great Concourse of People, who cannot be prevail’d upon to go to Bed till they come and see the Devil dance, as they term it.
