Afonwen, Pwllheli, Gwynedd (1910)

‘Haunted’ Cottage. Rappings and wailings. Welsh villagers “scared.”

The neighbourhood of Afonwen, near Pwllheli is in a state of turmoil (telegraphs a correspondent) owing to mysterious rappings and wailings stated to be heard in a house in the village occupied by a widow and her brother. Inquiries made yesterday elicited the following facts from the widow, with whom I obtained an interview.

She has lived in the house for about 12 months, and both her brother and herself hear repeated rappings and banging of doors nightly after they have retired. Following this come loud wailings, like the crying of a baby. The sounds are distinctly heard. The woman declares that the sound is inside the house, that all doors are safely locked, and that there are no children in the house.

These mysterious sounds cause great worry and anxiety to the occupants. Various explanations are set forth by people in the nieghbourhood as to the cause of the sounds. The house adjoining is unoccupied, and some regard the whole affair as a practical joke.

The woman, however, informed me that she also thought so at first, but the rapping and wailing heard nightly dispelled that theory. The widow and her brother are both well known in the district, and the story has spread as far as Criccieth.

Welsh Widow Alarmed by Midnight Wailings.

Pwllheli, Friday.

Some uneasiness has been created among the inhabitants of the neighbourhood of Afonwen, near Pwllheli, by mysterious rappings and wailings said to have been heard in a house in the small village of Talybont, occupied by a widow and her brother.

In the course of an interview to-day, the widow said she had lived in the house for about twelve months, and both her brother and herself had heard repeated rappings and bangings of doors nightly after they had retired. Following this, loud wailings, like the crying of a baby, have been distinctly heard. The woman declares that the sound is inside the house, that all the doors are safely locked, and that there are no children in the house. These mysterious sounds, she says, have caused them great worry and anxiety.

In the neighbourhood of Afonwen there are mysterious rappings and wailings. We can stand nearly anything, but we object to ghosts with lungs and with power to make rapping noises. These Afonwen ghosts probably read this paper and our advice is to clear out or there may be more rappings and wailings.
