She wanted a new house
So she pretended it was haunted.
The “ghost” of a haunted house at Apt, near Avignon, has been “laid,” but not before it had created a considerable sensation in the district, and large forces of gendarmes and police had been engaged to discover it. Strange rappings had been taking place on the walls of the house for several nights.
Finally the forces of law and order surrounded the place at night and waited. At 10 o’clock the rapping began. It was traced to a bedroom occupied by Madame Mathieu, the tenant, and her daughter, and a few minutes’ inquiry brought the confession from the daughter that she caused the rapping with her foot on the partition.
She did it, she said, at the request of her mother, who did not like the house, and thought that if she could get it the reputation of being haunted, her husband would seek another. – Central News.
