Articlave, County Derry, Ireland (1893)

 Spirit Rapping in Articlave.

Some sensation has been created in the neighbourhood of Articlave and Castlerock by a reported case of spirit-rapping in the first-named place. It seems that a woman named Campbell alleges that for about six weeks she has been disturbed almost nightly by mysterious noises in her cottage. The partition was knocked so hard that it was said to shake, and there were such strange and ghostly manifestations that she was unable to get any sleep.

Two young gentleman visitors essayed one evening to inquire into the mystery. They sat in the cottage until one o’clock in the morning, but during their vigil the spirit did not rap. The woman and her neighbours are, however, really alarmed a the weird and extraordinary noise made, apparently without any ascertainable cause.

If there are any persons of a spiritualistic turn in Derry they should endeavour to find out the meaning of the occult seances at Articlave. Rumour says that, not content with knocking on the partition, the unseen influence has agitated the furniture in a most untoward fashion, pillows being made to stand on end, and refusing to be “laid” even when the prongs of a pitchfork were despatched on a voyage of discovery into their interior. – Derry Sentinel.
