Bernay, Normandy, France (1925)

A French Ghost.

Bullet which passed through an apparition.

Mystified and not a little frightened by the continued visitations of what she believes to be a ghost. A Madame Hamon has been forced to leave the house where she lived at Bernay, not far from Paris. The ghost started with the usual manifestations, doors mysteriously opened, shutters flapping, lamps and kitchen utensils rattling on their shelves. All sorts of traps were set to find out the reason of these strange happenings and to ascertain if some practical joker was not trying to frighten the woman. But the phantom stood the test, and even when Daniel, the 17 year old son of Madame Hamon, fired a revolver at him, he allowed the bullet to pass through him in the true ghostly manner.

Three times Daniel saw the ghost glide through a closed door, and his younger sister bore witness to the fact. The limit was reached when, one evening, sitting peacefully in her bedroom Madame Hamon saw the door of a wardrobe open and the whole stock of linen within fly out and scatter itself in the most weird fashion over the floor. At the same time twelve eggs on the kitchen dresser broke with one single and audible report.

The house, now empty, is visited daily by enquiring crowds, while the police have put it under special surveillance.
