Bordeaux, France (1895)

In these days of modern incredulity accounts of haunted houses are usuallly treated with laughter and contempt, but the inhabitants living in the district round the Castle of Coudraie in France are still inclined to believe in a house being frequented by ghosts. The good people certainly have some reason for a belief in dwellings being spiritually influenced.  Regularly every evening at six o’clock a commotion arises in the castle. As the clock strikes the hour the furniture in the various rooms commences to dance about, the silver and the plate joins in the movement, whilst in the kitchen the pots and pans rattle merrily on the shelves, as if enjoying the alarm they occasion. No reason can be found for this hitherto unheard-of behaviour on their part, and police, who have concealed themselves in the castle, have watched without result. Twice has the local cure sprinkled holy water about, but nothing seems to take effect. The earliness of the hour, however, somewhat robs the case of its romantic side. Since when and wherefore have spirits abandoned the unwilling hour of midnight to carry on their little antics at the prosaic hour of dining?
