Cape Town, South Africa (1904)

 Cape Town “Ghosts”.

Knives, crockery, glass and furniture thrown about.

Cape Town has been suffering from a ghostly presence which has thrown knives, crockery, glass and stones through the air, banged furniture about, and knocked at strange doors. Hundreds of people have collected nightly outside a house where the manifestations are chiefly alleged to have taken place. The house is inhabited by a number of coloured people and Malays. One of the women says that she was actually struck by one of the stones, which was quite hot.

There were certain rooms, said one of the occupants to a “Cape Argus” representative, where things were worse; but as soon as anyone went into the affected rooms, all was quiet; furniture stopped moving, and knives ceased “floating about in the air.” One of the knives which it was alleged were thrown by the mysterious spirits was exhibited. It was a home-made affair of formidable size, and had an edge with which a strong man could perhaps cut butter.

After watching the house and listening to the strange noises for some days, the crowds outside broke the windows, with the idea, apparently, of hitting the ghosts.
