Mysterious stone-throwing.
Mrs Hannah Mawson, 127 Windmill Road, Foleshill, pleaded “not Guilty” through Mr S.F. Snape, to comitting 10s damage to a roof at Foleshill, the property of William George Wagstaff, 278, Grange Road, Foleshill.
Prosecuting, Mr H.L. Nelson said it was alleged that defendant was seen deliberately to throw a stone on to the roof. A further stone was thrown, and it was found that three tiles were broken. Mr Wagstaff’s tenant said that he saw defendant throw the first stone. While he was looking for that a second landed on his kitchen roof. Stone-throwing had been going on for months.
After six witnesses had been called. Mrs Mawson in the box denied she had ever thrown stones. There were none in her garden: she took such a pride in it.
Mr Snape asked: “Do you think you could hit the roof?” and on the reply being “No,” the Chairman remarked: “Perhaps – if she aimed at something else.”
Superintendent Drakeley said mysterious stone-throwing had been going on at intervals for about three years. He had come to the conclusion it was the work of the woman, but the throwing stopped when the police paid a visit. The penalty imposed was £2 2s.
