Apropos, – a “rapping” ghost in Eidswold, Norway, has been explained away with great ease by the geological institute of Christiania. Professor Helland attributes the knocking sound to seismic activity. As the vicinity was formerly subject to earthquakes, the mysterious rappings, in association with the smell of sulphur and occasional outbursts of blue flame, demands attention, and Dr Helland considers that boring should be at once commenced to, as it were, supply a safety valve.
This does not meet with approval from the peasants. They want to keep the brimstone, the blue flames, and the ghost as completely confined in their subterranean residence as possible. In fact, they have no faith in Professor Helland’s theories, and want no way made by which the earth spirits can escape.
