Evishbrack, County Tyrone (1906)

( Eibhis Breac / Evishbrack is near Kildress)

An Extraordinary Tale of Bewitchment in Tyrone.

Tyrone seems to be a happy hunting-ground for ghosts. The “Cookstown ghost” attained much notoriety in its day, and later the Stewartstown apparition which slew the chickens and defied all efforts to stop its ravages, occupied quite a large share of public attention. The latest interest in the “uncanny” is reported from Evishbrack, a mountainous district about eight miles from Cookstown.

It is stated that a farmer in this townland recently purchased a cow, but on putting her into the byre with the other cattle all efforts to keep her fastened proved futile. The animal was then turned into an empty building but the door of the house could not be kept shut, though bolted and barred. Not only so, but the doors of the farmhouse, both inside and outside, refused to remain fastened, and even the doors of drawers would fly open and when shut would instantly rebound.

The other day, it is stated, much to the consternation of the farmer’s family, the “coupling” of the roof of th ehouse in which the curious cow was housed left its place and took up a position on the top of an adjacent tree! Crowds of people have visited the scene of these wonderful occurrences, and are confident of still further developments.
