Falkirk, Stirlingshire (1994)

Shoe shop spooked by lost soles.

By Alan Crow.

Spooked shoe shop staff have walked out on their jobs… Because of haunting goings-on among the high heels! Workers say five of their colleagues have quit, after: A strange white mist covered the stock-room; A delivery hatch opened and shut by itself; Shoe boxes mysteriously moved around on their own; And ghostly footsteps were heard in the shop.

But bosses at Shoefayre, in Falkirk, Stirlingshire, say there’s no poltergeist among the platforms. Saturday girl Arlene Miller said she and a colleague felt a “spooky whirlwind” in a stockroom. She said: “There was a noise like a loud gust of wind. Then a voice like a chewed up cassette tape started talking to us. We were scared to death.”

Arlene, 16, of Stenhousemuir, hasn’t been at work since the incident, and has been to see her doctor. Senior assistant Allison Szanyi, from Falkirk, told her area supervisor. But she said: “He said we were imagining everything. I was really hurt.”

Area supervisor Malcolm Mouncey said: “These stories only emerged when the manageress went on holiday. The scare died down as soon as we drafted in a temporary manageress.”

Alison Szanyi, warned the boss.
