Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA (1885)

A Haunted House.

Mysterious manifestations at the cottage home of Cooney Driebelbiss.

Cooney Driebelbiss, of the fire department, and his wife, reside in a little cottage, in the rear of Rine Caps’ jewelry house, on East Main street. Saturday night, about 8 o’clock, Mrs Driebelbiss was startled by the dropping of stones and other missiles in the center of her sitting room. She summoned her husband and neighbours, but at intervals of fifteen minutes and a half an hour the stones fell, from whence no one could tell. These manifestations continued until 11 o’clock when the family abandoned the house. Yesterday the phenomena occurred to the consternation of all.

Capt. Deihl and Officer Humbrecht had possession of the premises Saturday night and right in front of their eyes pebbles would hop in the carpet floor. Once a piece of bone, dropped and then the small end of a gas pipe was flung into a corner. Chief Hilbrecht and his men went to the haunted cottage, locked the doors, closed the windows and stationed men up stairs and in the cellar. While a half dozen stalwart firemen stood about, the stones were tossed at regular intervals by weird, unseen hands.

Marshal Myer and his men visited the premises yesterday, but no one can solve the unearthly business. The house is owned by Mrs Eubelhoer, a widow, and is now vacant. Of course the queer occurrences will some day be explained, but they baffle ingenuity now.
