Fulham, London (1952)

 Noises in the night.

Ghost story in Ongar Road.

There are noises at night in a room at West London. Noises made by ghosts called George and Hines, says the tenant. Noises made by the tenant, says the landlady.

Told about this “haunted” room, a rent tribunal chairman, who does not believe in ghosts, is going to investigate. Mr F. Beaumont-Palmer adjourned a case at Hammersmith yesterday so he can see a room at Ongar Road, Fulham in which two men have died.

The tenant, Mr J. Hetherington, applied for extension of security of tenure. He said there were ghostly spirits in the room. At a previous hearing, when he was given three months’ security and his rent was reduced, Mr Hetherington said the ghosts knocked furniture, clattered plates and made themselves generally disagreeable.

Mr H. Haynes, solicitor for the landlady, Mrs E.F. Bennett, said yesterday that because of the alleged haunting all the other tenants have left. Mrs Bennett blames the Hetheringtons for noises heard at night, said Mr Haynes. Mr Hetherington brought in people at 3 a.m. to study the spirits, and called in people to put the spirits at rest. Mr Haynes said: “The landlady thinks the Hetheringtons have created this noise to frighten other tenants away. One left in a hurry, leaving a note beside her bed – ‘I won’t be sleeping here any more. It gives me the creeps’.”
