Glenearn, Perth (1901)

 A Ghost Story.

Mysterious doings at Glenearn.

During the past few nights the people residing on the estate of Glenearn have been thrown into a state of great consternation on account of the mysterious doings of some unknown person or persons. Glenearn is situated at the foot of the Ochil Hills, between two and three miles from Bridge of Earn, and the particular spot at which the malicious mischief has been perpetrated is a double cottage situated at the side of the road, one house being occupied by a gamekeeper and the other by a ploughman.

It appears that on Thursday night several blocks of firewood which were lying outside were suddenly thrown through the windows. The keeper and ploughman – one armed with a gun, the other with a revolver – kept watch during the night, but nobody could be seen, although the window breaking continued with some smaller missiles which have not been discovered.

On Friday night depredations were resumed, in spite of the fact that five or six men kept a strict watch all around the place.

So strange and mysterious has everything been in connection with the matter that many of the more superstitious attribute the strange doings to a “ghost.” The local policeman has been apprised of the strange ongoings, and to-night, accompanied by a detective and a strong body of watchers, every effort will be put forth to lay the “ghost.” In all something like thirty panes of glass have been broken.
