Heaton Mersey, Greater Manchester (1942)

Heaton Mersey’s Mystery.

The majority of people just smile and nod when told of experience with ghost noises – mysterious knocks, scrapings or bangs.

When my telephone rang on Monday I recognised the voice of an old friend of the Stockport Express from Heaton Mersey, but heard with surprise his message. It was that Heaton Mersey was providing a real mystery. Wall tapping and scraping had been heard. All the ingredients of a first class thrill.

Many people said it was a trick, or something was loose. It seems as if something is loose in this Heaton Mersey dwelling, judging by the experiences of a colleague who investigated.

A blank wall, in a room on a second storey. Suddenly, quietly, “Tap, tap, tap, tap.” No answers to a question as to who was there. Peace again. Then three loud bangs resounding through a thin partition, both sides of which were open to view. Nothing there. Sawing noises have been heard at night. Search proved vain, and the sounds remained a complete mystery.

Thursday last week was reported to be the first occasion on which these noises were heard, but further inquiry revealed that knockings had been heard some months previously. Two of the oldest Merseyites say they cannot recollect anything similar in the long years of their experiences. It was truly uncanny to stand and hear the noises and find no explanation. What a task for the Mersey “spook hunters”.
