The most famous of the ancestors of Mr A.A. Macdonell, the new Professor of Sanscrit at Oxford, was the Loch-garry of the ’45. Like a good many of his associates his absolute loyalty to the cause he espoused was doubted – whether with good reason or no is uncertain. He was greatly incensed at the conduct of his oldest son, who joined the British Army.
Old Loch-garry threw his dirk after the degenerate youth, adding a curse on Lochgarry House so long as it sheltered a servant of the Hanoverian usurper. Family legend avers that the house was henceforth haunted by a rapping and knocking ghost, which made the place untenable.
