Itchen Abbas, Hampshire (1907)

Itchen Abbas.

The “Ghost” Scare.

In the course of domestic duties in one of the bedrooms at the Itchen Common farmhouse the woodman’s daughter, who is in service there, is alleged to have seen to her great astonishment one end of a floorboard rise up and fall back into its place again! It will be remembered the “ghost” of a man who is supposed to have hanged himself there many years ago is said to haunt the premises on certain nights. Weird noises are said to be still heard at the dead of night coming from the direction of the farm.

Hampshire Observer and Basingstoke News, 2nd March 1907.

Many years ago at a farmhouse on Itchen Common, at Itchen Abbas, Hampshire, a man committed suicide by hanging. Now a ghost haunts the present occupants of the house. The apparition of the man is said to have been seen on many occasions lately, and weird noises have been heard. Doors have mysteriously opened and shut, things have been moved by unseen hands, and one of the servants has declared that in her bedroom she distinctly saw one of the floor boards rise and then fall back into its position again!
