A “Ghost” Mystery Solved.
A family in the Meanwood Road district of Leeds have been considerably alarmed of late by the ringing of bells and the knocking of doors in their house. Believing the house to be in the hands of ghosts, they applied to the police at Sheepscar Police Station for assistance. A constable who was sent to the house failed to discover the cause of the strange disturbances, and even when he was reinforced by two sergeants the mystery remained unsolved. The bells continued to ring, and they had eventually to give up their effort to discover the source of the “supernatural” displays.
What could not be discovered by the police has, however, been found out by a civilian, who, on Saturday evening, posted himself in a place in which he was able to command the kitchen in which a servant girl was in the habit of doing her work. The solution of the mystery proved to be a most commonplace one, and will not interest either Mr Stead or any other enthusiast on the subject of “ghosts” and “spooks.” He saw the girl throw a duster at the set of bells, knock and kick at the door, and then open it herself. The family dispensed with the services of the girl, and thus got rid of the ghostly disturbances which have so troubled their peace of mind.
