Llanwonno / Llanwynno, Rhondda Cynon Taf (1884)

 Strange story from Llanwyno.

Reported ghostly visits.

The ancient parish of Llanwyno, of which Pontypridd forms a part, is at present exercised by exciting statements respecting some singular manifestations said to have been heard and witnessed at Gellyfynaches Farm. Gellyfynaches is the Welsh for “Grove of the Nun.” But whether the nun lived there in the flesh or is only now haunting the locality is not stated. All that is positively known is that from the remotest times the parishioners have always associated the summit of Graigwen and Gellyfynaches with the supernatural.

During the last fortnight strange noises are reported to have been heard at night about the old house. If the noises have originated in the ghostly presence of the nun it is conjectured that she is a wicked one; for one night she actually broke one of the windows of the house. And, again, on another night she assaulted the servant girl by filling her mouth with mud, and tore one of her petticoats.

Several people from Pontypridd have organised a Vigilance Committee, and visited the spot with guns, watching until day-break a few nights ago. They did not, however, see the nun, or anybody like her, and the watch is now being continued.
