Mandalay, Myanmar (1893)

Burma.

A True Ghost Story.

There is a rather large mat[?] house on 21st Street, Mandalay, which enjoys the reputation of being haunted, several persons having testified to the mysterious sounds which proceed from this uncanny dwelling house during the hours of night. A short time ago the house was rented by a European, who knew nothing of the evil reputation attached to it; but after spending the first night in his new abode – during which he declares he never slept a wink, in consequence of almost continuous footsteps passing through his bedroom and mysterious scratchings on the walls – he asked a friend to spend the following night in his company, but without giving the true reason for giving the invitation.

That night, shortly after 12 o’clock, his friend got up and complained of people walking about the room, the footsteps passing quite close to him. Of course he was told that he had been dreaming, and he was persuaded to return to bed. But within the next hour he jumped up suddenly and swore that someone, whom he could dimly see although the lamp was burning, had walked up to and stood by his bedside and only retired on his crying out. The occupant of the house had heard the same footsteps, and they both sat up till morning, sleep being out of the question.

The former occupants of the house had to quit for the same reason; and it is said that, ever since two Burmese women – sisters – died in th ehouse within a few hours of each other and were buried in the same grave, the mysterious noises in question have been heard. – Mandalay Herald.
