 A Ghost at Nynee Tal.

We read in the Hurkaru: –

“The Cock Lane Ghost has been rusticating at Nynee Tal, and has moreover had the good taste to fix its temporary residence in the bungalow of the Lieutenant-Governor of the North-West Provinces. A few days ago the sirdar bearer of his Honour’s private secretary happened to die in the aforesaid bungalow, and for some hours afterwards nothing amiss occurred.

On the following day, however, at about 5 p.m., a shower of stones rained into the house from all directions. This went on for five hours, and was repeated on several subsequent days. Among the unbelieving the general impression, of course, was that there was nothing supernatural in this mysterious affair, and guards were posted on all sides to arrest the culprits guilty of so great a folly.

Need we add that the precaution was vain and futile. The stones came rattling in as fast as ever, and up to the 11th September no clue had been discovered as to the cause of, or motive for, the nuisance. What with ghostly dealers in curds and whey in Calcutta, and spiritual pelters of terrestrial stones at Nynee Tal, and other phenomena more distinctly traceable to weak nerves and bad digestion, it is clear that India is no longer fit for the abode of decent orderly Christians, who go to roost with the birds and get up at cock-crow.”
