Supernatural Phenomena.
Considerable excitement is now prevailing at a village called Nedimala, near Dehiwala, owing to some supernatural phenomena taking place at a house there. The subject is being warmly discussed among the natives, and particulars regarding the work of the supernatural agencies have reached the native press.
It appears that a well-to-do man died in the village, leaving a considerable fortune to his heirs. A few days after his death the house where he died was reported to be haunted, and the ghost of the deceased was seen about the house. No notice was taken of it by the inmates of the house until the disembodied spirit took to practical jokes, which are now being daily carried on. It is said that he creates much unpleasantness by throwing stones at the people of the house, removing their cooked rice and curry, or throwing sand on them, hiding articles of furniture, removing things from neighbouring houses to the deceased’s house, and several other practical jokes.
The natives are trying all manner of mantrams and charms to exorcise the spirits, but with what results I do not know. – T.
