Newcastle on Tyne (1945)

 Ladykirk-road Ghost Laid.

Everybody said they were haunted – those two houses in Ladykirk-road, Newcastle on Tyne, whose furniture moved mysteriously, doors jammed, and walls shivered. One morning Mrs Hogg, who lived in one of them, was in her front garden when her foot sank through the soil. Mr Tom Hogg, her husband, came to the rescue. It was found that her foot had broken the earth surface over the mouth of a disused mine-shaft 125ft deep, with water at the bottom. And now the Ladykirk-road ghost is laid.
