North Shields, Tyne and Wear (1869)

A Ghost Story at North Shields.

Regularly at midnight during last week, the family of Mr. J.J. Forrest, in Saville Street West, North Shields, after retiring to rest, were alarmed by mysterious knockings at the door of their kitchen which is at the back of the building. A strict watch was kept both inside of the house and outside, but the mystery received no solution. The strange knocking still went on, and matters now became serious.

At last suspicion fell upon the servant who slept in the kitchen; she was interrogated, but, with solemn protestations, she denied being the author of the annoyance. Detective Hunter, having been previously sent for, arrived in the house at the time, and on his questioning the girl she confessed that she had produced the “ghostly” noises, but gave no reason for doing so.
