Extraordinary Phenomenon.
A Copenhagen telegram says – A mysterious occurence in a lonely little spot called Syversrud, in the province of Tolemarken, is attracting the attention of the whole of Noway. On the rocky coast there is a small house, the dwellers in which were disturbed some time ago by loud knockings from underground. There are plenty of reliable witnesses who also heard the noises, which so frightened the people of the house that they left.
The noises, however, continue, and all investigations up to the present have yielded no result. The people of the district attribute the noises to spirits.
At King Christian’s request, a scientific commission was appointed to draw up a report, and borings have been made, without success. It is certain that the noises are not due to volcanic causes, and the only plausible theory yet put forward is that gases escaping from the sea water have penetrated under the house. In the meantime fresh and deeper borings are being made.
