A Stony Stratford Debate. Indigestion or –?
“Is there such a thing as a ghost?! This was the subject of a serious debate at a largely-attended meeting of members of the Stony Stratford Literary Society. Mr Ulph Woollard, who presided, related a ghost story of Old Wolverton Mill. He had a personal touch with it 30 or 40 years ago. A rumour went round, said Mr Woollard, about mysterious knockings, and as he was very friendly with people at the mill he visited them in order to “lay” the ghost. He armed himself with a revolver. It was not loaded, but he thought it might be useful to scare anything that might be about.
At nine o’clock there came a “rap-rap” at the back door of the house. His friend rushed in that direction and he went out at the front, but there was nothing to be seen or heard, save the rippling of the river and trickling of water at the mill wheel. No trace could be found of anyone.
This went on night after night to such an extent that the maid got scared and gave notice. After she left there were no more ghosts. (Laughter.)
