Opawa, Kamienna Góra, Poland (1930)

 Tapping wherever she goes.

A mysterious spirit visitation, which has caused tremendous excitement in the village of Oppau, in the Landeshut district of Germany, centres round the nine-year-old daughter of a farmer named Rasche. Wherever the child goes she is accompanied by a mysterious knocking, which can be explained by no physical cause. These tappings first began to manifest themselves in the middle of October, and since November 9 have been heard daily.

In order to investigate the matter and allay the fears of the local population the Mayor appointed a commission consisting of the district surgeon, the chairman of the local council, and three police officials. The commission examined the walls and roof of the house, but found not even a rat to account for the tappings. The girl was placed on a table and “insulated” with a glass plate and a rubber sheet, but the tappings continued.

The girl stated that she could give no explanation. The knockings did not affect her in any way. The surgeon placed a hazel twig in  the girl’s hands to see whether there might be some connection between the tappings and subterranean water or a vein of ore beneath the house. The rod moved violently in the girl’s hands.

The commission’s investigations thus proved inconclusive, and the villagers firmly believe the girl is possessed by a spirit from the other world.
