Paris, France (1902)

 The curse of a family.

Quite recently in France in one of the outskirts of Paris a rumour went quickly from mouth to mouth that a particular family was haunted, and it was said that wherever any member went supernatural noises were heard. The family became quite isolated, and indeed they were unable to obtain even food from the shopkeepers, who werewarned that if they served them they would lose their other customers. At one of the local schools the only daughter, a girl of six, was in the habit of attending, and even the scholars, following the example of their parents, declared they could hear the mysterious knocking whenever they stood by the side of this little girl. The parents wrote to the schoolmistress and when she refused to send the girl home the whole of the school revolted and refused to attend.

This went on for nearly a month, and at last the local Cure had to arrange to send the little girl to another village under an assumed name. Then the villagers boycotted the family, and so serious did matters become that the soldiers had to form a cordon round their house to protect them.
