Penang’s Ghost.
Penang boasts a real, live ghost which walks in the dead of night, removes the glass fronts of pictures hanging on the walls, carefully places the glass on the floor and then silently steals away. It is all very disconcerting, or rather was, to the two young men who occupied the haunted house, situated in Western Road, not far from the cemetery. Those people who have been given details of these strange visitations hold the view that the ghost merely wanted to frighten the occupants into leaving the house. If this be so, the ghost succeeded, for recently the two young men concerned decided that discretion was the better part of valour and withdrew.
Apparently the ghost walked twice, and on each occasion visited the same bedroom while the occupant was asleep and removed the glass front of a picture portraying a scene from the Bible. The cook-boy, while declaring that the house was “hantu,” said that he would stay so long as the tuans did.
The curious fact about the whole matter is that for a period of six months prior to these two men taking up residence there, another Penang man lived in the house alone and he was never troubled by visitations. – Straits Times, Aug. 20.
