Poltergeist pranks in Piccadilly?
London (A.A.P.)
Tenants in London’s fashionable Burlington Arcade in Piccadilly are wondering if the arcade has become the home of poltergeists, the “Daily Telegraph” said yesterday.
Scotland Yard detectives, after an exhaustive search, have been unable to discover why articles in some of the shops have been moved about each night – none removed. Detectives said there had been no forcible entries or other breach of law evident. The Yard has logged the mystery as a mere “occurrence.”
The “Daily Telegraph” said when the arcade shops opened on several recent mornings it was found, for instance, in one shop two handbags and a briefcase from a shelf were on the floor, and in another shop a heavy pewter jar, a penrack, and a blotter missing from the rack were found in a semi-circle on the floor.
The “Daily Telegraph” said tests to find if rats could be responsible showed this was unlikely. It added: “Among the tenants only one theory remains: Some country poltergeist has decided to go in for creature comforts in Piccadilly.”
