Plymouth, Devon (1767)

Extract of a letter from Plymouth, Nov. 21.

“The conversation of this town in engrossed with a surprizing affair that has happened here, something similar to the Cock-lane ghost: – A gentleman of the law has for some time past been troubled with an uncommon noise in his house, to the great terror of him and every body else in it, and the other night he declares he saw the apparition of a lady in his bed-chamber, and describes her dress in a very paprticular manner; which has so frightened him, that he labours under a very great dejection of spirits.

An eminent Doctor, his friend, imagining there might be some deception in it, staid up one night; who declares he heard the noise, but did not see the apparition.”
