A “Haunted House” in Islay.
A correspondent, dating from Islay, sends the following:-
For some time past a manse in the neighbourhood of Port Ellen, Islay, has been subjected to various strange noises and other curious manifestations. On Sunday night, however, the matter is said to have come to a head. The story goes that while the clergyman’s wife was talking to the servant in the kitchen they were startled by hearing groans from an upper portion of the house, and immediately thereafter the form of a woman walked between them, and then vanished. The servant fainted, and the mistress called her husband and told him what had taken place. He immediately suggested that they should pray, but before the prayer was ended the clergyman found his chair knocked away from under him. This made the party start up and leave the house, making their exit to Port Ellen. Two or three men on Monday arranged to spend the night in the manse for the purpose of bearding the ghost.
