A Silent Force at Work.
Strange story from San Fernando.
On Wednesday last, one of our representatives visited the house of Mr George Hodge, at Princes Town, for the purpose of witnessing the pranks which are alleged to be committed by the furniture. He did not see anything during his stay, but met several persons at the house, apparently sympathising with Mrs Hodge and her seven children. Mr Hodge was absent, and Mrs Hodge told a story that took some nerve to tell it.
Hostilities commenced about a month ago, but within the last ten days things assumed a very serious nature. About a cart load of stones had entered the house from the time the unseen agent commenced its onslaught. At intervals, as if by one magic the pieces of furniture would vie with each other in the effort to make the most noise, keeping up a continuous roar. The inmates were never certain of their meals until they had eaten, and in the present circumstances that happened very seldom. If they succeeded in cooking, a huge rain of dust would imperceptibly get into the pot, and so rob them of their expected meal, sometimes before the food was cooked the pot would be thrown off the fire. On one occasion said Mrs Hodge “I had just finished cooking when the pot tilted and I had to call the children to help me to secure it.”
This is but a small portion of the experience the Hodges say they have been undergoing recently, and although the Police and others have been in attendance no one has succeeded in tracing the source of all these strange happenings. It is needless to say that the family are in a very uneasy state.
